DSU to host sports weekend

DSU to host sports weekend Delta State University Athletics’ annual warm weather bash, Spring Sports Weekend, is set for Thursday through Sunday, April 12-15, with a schedule of events that offers something for everyone!  As we welcome back alumni, fans and friends of the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen, we hope you make plans now to be on campus for Spring Sports Weekend.

The annual Bolivar County Chapter of the Delta State Alumni Association gathering – Bugs, Blues and BBQ – will kickoff the weekend on Thursday, April 12 from 6-9 pm.  Last year saw record attendance at the meeting and this year’s schedule is packed with fun for the entire family.  Bugs, Blues and BBQ is the chapter’s way of raising funds for the Bolivar County Alumni Scholarship.

Bugs, Blues and BBQ features some of the finest crawfish ($15) and barbecue ($10) in the Mississippi Delta!  While feasting on the Delta’s best cuisine, alumni, fans and friends may participate in the Green & White Silent Auction that includes over 25 items donated for the event.  To see a complete list of items, please click here <http://www.deltastate.edu/PDFFiles/Alumni/Bolivar%20County%20Silent%20Auction%20List%202012.pdf> .

A staple of Bugs, Blues and BBQ has always been the music, and this year is no different!  The Delta Music Institute’s DeltaRox will perform live at the event.  Parents can also rest easy, as the ever popular KidZone will be up and running.

The weekend continues Friday, April 13 with the Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame and Alumni Coaches Hall of Fame Induction Banquet.  The 2012 class includes Rodney Batts (Baseball), Josh Bright (Football), Jerry Holt (Football), Cetin Oguz (Swimming), Trina Davis Sykes (Women’s Basketball), Mary Taylor (Swimming) and Joseph White, Jr. (Track).  Inductee bios are below.

The DSU Alumni Coaches Hall of Fame will also welcome two Mississippi legends in Cooper Farris, who has directed Gulf Coast Community College for 19 years and Jesse Murphree, who turned Clarksdale High School into one of the state’s top football programs.

The 2012 Induction Class features a cross section of Statesman and Lady Statesman athletes that have helped propel the programs at DSU to the forefront of NCAA Division II athletics.  Each inductee received All-American or All-Conference honors at least once in their careers, while every inductee served in a leadership role during their careers at Delta State.

The nine inductees and their families will be recognized at the annual DSU Sports Hall of Fame and Alumni Coaches Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on Friday, April 13.  The event will begin with a social at 5:30 p.m. inside the Simmons Room at the Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni House and will conclude with the banquet at 6:30 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum.  Tickets are $20 and are on sale now at Chadwick-Dickson Fieldhouse.  For more information, please call (662) 846-4300 or email us at athletics@deltastate.edu.
