ECCC Softball Squad Eliminated in State Tourney A second-straight state championship was not to be for the East Central Community College fast-pitch softball squad which fell 4-3 to Northwest Mississippi Community College Thursday afternoon in first-round action of the MACJC State Softball Tournament hosted by Itawamba Community College in Fulton.
EC trailed 3-0 after five innings but scored twice in the top the sixth following an RBI single from Haylee Roberts, which scored Haelie Allen of Leake Academy, and a run-scoring triple by Brittany Pounders of Southeast Lauderdale, which brought home Roberts.
The Lady Diamond Warriors tied the contest at 3-3 in the seventh on Allen’s RBI single which scored Lajoya Griffin of Philadelphia. Griffin had walked earlier in the inning and later stole second base.
Northwest scored the winning run on an RBI single by Stormy Robinson, which scored Codie Jones who singled earlier in the inning and advanced to second on a ground out.
Allen led EC hitters with two singles and an RBI. Pounders finished with a triple and RBI, and Roberts and Griffin each had singles. Roberts also knocked in a run.
Tenna Patterson took the loss on the mound, allowing three earned runs on five hits through 6 1/3 innings. She also fanned six batters. Patterson is a product of Lexington (Ala.) High School.
The Lady Diamond Warriors complete the 2012 campaign with a 32-14 record under head coach Scott Hill and assistant Kristin Chaney.
