Course to Teach Teen Drivers ³Street Survival² at CAFB

May 4, 2012

Course to Teach Teen Drivers “Street Survival” at CAFB –One of the hardest things for parents to do is to watch thier newly licensed
teenage children drive away alone for the first time. They know that lack of experience increases
the risk to their teens. The Mississippi Region of the Sports Car Club of America (MSSCCA)
has joined with Tire Rack and area sponsors to bring real-world driving training to the North
Mississippi.
On Saturday, May 19, the organizations will host a Tire Rack Street Survival
® School at
Columbus Air Force Base from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The primary emphasis is car control and
safety on the road. The course provides hands-on experience with situations such as accident
avoidance and skid recovery. The course is open to licensed or permitted drivers ages 15-21.
Cost to participate is $75 per driver.
“Seeing my son drive off alone for the first time was difficult. I wanted to make sure he had all
the skills possible to make him a safe driver,” explained MSSCCA member Ed Rice, who took
his son Sam to a Street Survival School in Memphis four years ago.
Each student is paired with an experienced instructor throughout the class which integrates
classroom instruction, driving course time and live safety demonstrations. Using the cars they
routinely drive, participants learn about their own cars’ limits, and they learn to be more
observant and anticipatory of surrounding traffic conditions.
"Any driver can encounter a dangerous situation on the road at any given time. Street Survival
taught me how to best avoid those situations," stated Sam Rice, former Street Survival student.
Event sponsors include Cadence Bank, Carl Hogan Toyota, Galloway-Chandler-McKinney
Insurance, Graphic Arts Productions, Pryor & Morrow, Royal Trucking Company and WCBI.
The program qualifies for insurance premium discounts for many auto insurance companies.
Due to Air Force security procedures, the deadline to enroll is Friday, May 11 for civilians (non-
CAFB military). Space for the course is limited to 30 students. Parents are encouraged to
attend.
