MDOT’s Trip Tips: Enjoy Summer Fun Safely (PHOTOTS ATTACHED)

>
> JACKSON, MISS. — On Memorial Day, we honor those who gave their lives to keep our country safe. Now it is your turn to protect your loved ones through travelling safely all summer long. Before hitting the road for the family cookout or annual beach trip, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) would like to offer some tips to holiday and summer travelers.
>
> Just as you would not want to go on vacation without luggage, do not let your vehicle leave without its essentials. Before any long-distance trip, make sure to check your vehicle thoroughly beforehand. Here are a few pre-trip vehicle checks MDOT suggests:
>
> Check tires for tread wear and proper pressure
> Check your battery
> Make sure belts and hoses are in good shape
> Replace your windshield wiper blades
> Check all brake and head lights
> Make sure your air conditioning is ready for the heat
> Check amount and quality of oil and antifreeze
>
> MDOT also recommends keeping a first aid kit, flashlight and basic repair tools in your vehicle. To ensure an easy return, bring along a spare car key to keep in a safe place. That way, if your key gets lost in the sand, you can continue relaxing instead of tracking down a replacement.
>
> With Memorial Day and other summer festivities coming up, MDOT also reminds the traveling public of the importance of always driving sober.
>
> “Drunk driving crashes are a huge problem and are completely preventable,” said MDOT Executive Director Melinda McGrath. “We want to encourage everyone to plan ahead before they celebrate. Designate a sober driver beforehand; don’t wait until you’ve already been drinking.”
>
> Whether you plan on taking a weekend road trip or a cross-country adventure, travel safe to ensure that everyone on the road can have a fun Memorial Day and summer.
